My new website: October Cat Studios

Without further adieu, here is my website.  I will still keep blogging here but my website is for those of you who just want to see my work without listening to me ramble on and on.  It still needs tweaking but here it is!

I made the name plural (October Cat Studios) because I have many creative outlets and in my mind each one is a different studio, but sometimes they  like to visit each other.

Altered Barbies

About 20 years ago when I was collecting Barbie dolls (yes I have the #1 Barbie that came out in 1959 in the black and white bathing suit) I remember going to a Barbie convention and seeing a few "altered Barbies".  At that point I was teaching myself how to reroot hair on old Barbies and that's when the two ideas merged: reroot non traditional hair and design a non traditional outfit.  That weekend I tried to create my first altered Barbie and let me tell you that my vision was a lot more polished than what actually happened!  I will try anything once and I tried it but decided it wasn't for me... until last year.  I tried it again and this time I loved my results!

Zentangle inspired:

This one was inspired by the button on her back that, when pushed, lights up her torso and legs.  I'm not sure if I'm finished with this one yet.  I would like to paint more designs on her chest and maybe put some braids in her hair.  In the last picture you can see that her belly is lit up blue and one of her legs is lit up red, this is more more vibrant in person.

I also create one of a kind art dolls and in my mind these two go hand-in-hand, art dolls and altered dolls.

Featured Friday Artist: Betsy Youngquist

I am a HUGE Pinterest person (you can find my page here).  I have a board called Art Dolls and Softees because not only do I design art dolls I LOVE looking at other peoples creative imaginations as well.  Be warned, on my Pinterest board I have pinned 579 pictures in this category alone! 

A few months ago I pinned this picture:

My first thought was "How did she do this?!"  I was intrigued by all of the beads and how they all just made sense, the colors, the placement, the sizes, everything.  Then in the winter issue of Where Women Create she is a featured artist!  I was so excited to learn more about this very talented lady, Betsy Youngquist. In the article her work is described as "Betsy's work reflects a fascination with the intersection of humans, animals and mythology.  Stemming from a  lifelong love of all creatures great and small, her work weaves together the human and animal spirit."

Zentangle Barbie

I don't think I'm quite finished with her yet, she needs something else on her dress and more paint on her legs, but this is my second altered Barbie: Zentangle Barbie

Before Picture:  (Again I got so excited about her I jumped right into it without taking a before "body shot" picture, but this was her face)

I may color a few more of her braids black also.  For the braids I dipped the ends in Elmer's glue to make them stiff and pointy.  The black braids were dipped in black acrylic paint.

Her dress is tied with black lace which you see hanging down in front of her painted legs.

Acorn Barbie

My newest artistic endeavor?  Altered dolls!  I find played with and loved dolls (Barbie and the like) and give them a whole new look.  If you'd like to donate to the cause that would be great.  You won't be finding these in your local toy store any time soon.

Notice the heads in the front of the picture.  During the creative process it gets a little ugly with headless Barbies being spray painted and hung up to dry in the garage but in the end all legs and arms find their way back to their rightful owner.  Well at least for now.

I got so excited about jumping into this that I forgot to take a "before" picture of my first one.  This was the stage that I remembered to take the picture:

Anyway, from now on I will document them from beginning to end.  This was my first altered Barbie and I aptly named her Acorn Barbie:

I love her and she's mine all mine!
